On Monday, the day after the marathon, I felt great! I went for a 3.5-mile bike ride, did yoga, and went shopping! On Tuesday, I crashed!! I had to go back to work and I felt like I was coming down with something. My upper chest hurt. It was difficult to take a deep breath. I felt like I had a weight on my chest or was it in my chest??? I thought if I could swallow enough perhaps the feeling would go away. I ate things trying to push the feeling down. I drank water trying to push it down. Nothing worked! I had visions of my slippers, comfy pajamas, and my bed. I wanted to leave work! The overwhelming feeling of fatigue was taking over my body.
On Wednesday, I had a 2-mile recovery run scheduled, but didn’t make it. The weird feeling in my chest remained. I still felt exhausted. I was wondering all kinds of things: “Do I have a fever? Am I coming down with the flu? Do I have some odd post-marathon chest disease? Will I ever get over this terrible feeling?” I had to find something to get my mind off of how I was feeling. I solicited the help of a co-worker. “Show me how to crochet!” She quickly showed me the basics. After work, I went to Wal-Mart and bought yarn, a needle, and a how-to book. Feeling somewhat desperate, I clumsily began to TRY to crochet. It was very frustrating at first. It wasn’t the relaxing activity I was looking for, but I kept trying. (It’s getting better.)
On Thursday, I wasn’t as tired, but I still had that feeling in my chest. After work, Terri and I went for a short, slow 2-mile run. The feeling in my chest went away. Great, but bizarre! (Later that evening…more crocheting.)
On Friday, I had friends over for drinks after work. My chest was feeling better, and the night of laughter and chatter was long overdue.
On Saturday morning, Terri and I ran an easy 3.5 miles. The legs were feeling better and so was the chest.
Week 2 Post-Marathon:
Monday – 30 minute run.
Tuesday – Cross Training
Wednesday – (Dull pain in chest has returned.) 1.5 miles (rained out), 30 minutes Pilates, 30 minutes weights
How soon do you race again after a marathon? I keep wondering what now? Where do we go now?
